Hunmanby Holiday

Spread the love

Our cottage was in a little village called Hunmanby, not far from Filey. We booked through Yorkshire Coastal Holidays. We were not disappointed.

Formally an old dairy building on a farm, now stands a converted two-bedroomed cottage, with a bathroom, lounge, and kitchen. The garden is fully enclosed – a peaceful haven for garden birds.

Things to Do

During our week the weather was warm and sunny most of the time, so it was easy to find things to do. The cottage was very close to the Centenary Way and so provided a marked walkway through the fields to Filey. We used this every day to exercise the dogs, normally early in the morning. Then we visited local beaches in the evenings when the weather was cooler, and it was quieter, to provide a longer walk for them.

Beach walks

We visited Scarborough, which was a busier and more commercialised resort. But we preferred both Bridlington and Filey, which were smaller and quieter. We enjoyed the traditional seaside town feel of them both and found lovely tearooms to stop for refreshments. Tiffin and Co was in the old town part of Bridlington and offered delicious sandwiches, snacks, and homemade cakes. In Filey, we found Angela’s Tearoom which again served a variety of meals and snacks. Payment there was by cash only and there was no WiFi. Customers are encouraged to “talk to each other like it is 1995”. There were lots of things to do at each of the resorts. We decided to play Crazy Golf in Filey as part of Jess’ birthday celebrations. Jess won the game and even got a hole in one! We celebrated with an ice cream and a walk along the beach.

Hunmanby

We took a stroll around Hunmanby too, a small village with a selection of useful shops. We did sample the local Chinese takeaway, China China, one evening and would recommend them for quality and service. On the outskirts of Scarborough, we visited Dean’s Garden Centre which stocked a wide range of gifts and plants. This again had a tearoom which provided a well earned coffee and cake stop on a hot day.

The beaches in this area were all beautiful, clean, and sandy. At Filey, one part is not accessible to dogs, but they are allowed on long stretches either side of the restricted area. The access at Reighton Sands is down a rather steep, uneven track, but the beach is well worth visiting. Again, clean, and sandy, quiet, and unspoilt. Our favourite was the beach at Hunmanby Gap, which had a car park open during the day, road parking in the evenings. The path down was much more even to walk on, the beach café sold delicious cobs and cakes, and there were port-a-loo toilets in the car park.

Continuing Amy’s Travels

On one of our evening walks to the beach we took some of Travel Fairie Amy’s ashes to scatter in the sea. Amy loved to swim and would always brave the sea, however cold, on family holidays, so it seemed fitting that part of her was given back to the waves. Jess stood on a rock, and facetimed Lucy so that we were all there to share the moment. Amy travels with us, and always will in our hearts. We will never forget her as we go on journeys of our own.
